‘’How to travel wisely to a foreign country’’
Traveling abroad can be a lot of hassle and will always bring few unexpected things. However, if you would be
prepared ahead with safety in mind, you’re going to be golden and good to go wherever and whenever you want.
Tip #1: Know for how long you’re going to be gone abroad, whether it’s two weeks or a whole year. Take care of
important things like paying bills ahead and cleaning the house a day before you leave. Also, talk to friends and family
members, so they could keep an eye on your house or apartment while you’re gone and pick up your mail.
Since there has been a lot of package thieves, who would steal your packages and run away, it’s a good idea
to tell your friends when you expect your shoes or accessories for your dog to come in. Also when the mailbox
is full, it will mean that nobody is home and will give heads up to burglars to come in and rob the house.
Tip #2: Keep in touch via Facebook, Instagram or e-mail and write down the address of your destination and
accommodation for your parents or closest and trustworthy friends. There have been quite few situations when
people were either kidnapped or disappeared while being abroad and no one ever found them, because missing
person’s friends didn’t even know they were out of state!. If something happens to you, knowing the location
of where you were last seen would help up speed the process for the police.
Tip #3: Reserving tickets few months ahead is better than doing it at the last moment and you would get a
better deal. The best times to order them would be Tuesdays after 4 pm and it would be wisely to browse
through various websites and compare prices, rather than jumping on the first website and ending up spending
more than if you booked through other company.
Tip #4: As soon as you arrive to the airport of your destination, look for money exchange kiosks. They would
help you save plenty of money! If you would not exchange them, you would get to spend twice as much or
wouldn’t even be able to buy food. When my fiance and I traveled through Canada, we spent much more than
we expected by not exchanging money in the first place.
Tip #5: Make sure you know the dress code and rules of the country to which you’re heading to. If you’re a
woman and are wearing very open attire, in countries like Brazil and Qatar you would get arrested or simply
be frowned upon. It would also help if you don’t make it obvious to dress in tourist clothes. Example: wearing
a big white tee that says ‘’I LOVE GREECE”, etc. That will attract owners of the souvenir shops, and in countries
like Turkey and Israel, the sellers wouldn’t leave you alone until you will buy something. The items at souvenir
shops are twice as expensive as if you buy the same item on a market. In addition, some of the souvenirs you
could order online or are simply a waste of money.
Tip #6: Females- don’t bring purses with you, because they could be easily stolen and ripped right off your
shoulder. Carry either backpack or a messenger bag, because both are hard to grab onto and are easier to
carry. Men- never, ever carry things in the back pockets, only in the front. There are pick pockets all over the
world. Don’t show cash in public,  dress in designer clothes and don’t flash your diamond or golden necklace.
It will attract attention to potential thieves, especially if you’re in a third-world country like Turkmenistan or
Syria.
Tip #7: Bring only the necessities! Just in case your documents get lost or stolen, make electronic copies of
passports, birth certificates, social security cards and send them to your email. That’s one of many things that
my fiance and I didn’t do when we had all of our documents stolen while traveling across the states. Thankfully
we got them back after six months, but it was extremely stressful and  in the end we’ve learned our lesson.
Pack only the clothes that you will need and are right for the occasion. You don’t need to bring your evening
gown and a tuxedo if you’re not planning to go out to five-star restaurants.
Tip #8: Get a travel insurance. Even your own health insurance can have an option for international coverage.
It’s better to spend bit money and have a peaceful state of mind, in case of injury, illness or even death.
Tip #9: If you’re renting a car, always hide valuables in good places: underneath the seats, between the seats
or in the seats’ back pockets (some cars might not have them). If you’re traveling in your car, buy tinted
windows, so the robbers wouldn’t see what’s exactly inside. It would also help to cover everything in black
garbage bags or with a blanket.
Tip #10: Be nice to everyone, but learn to say ‘’No’’ politely and don’t tell everyone your life story, because it
will be used against you. If you are rude to the foreigners for no reason, it’s just going to bring you bad karma
and most of the time trouble.
Tip #11: Stay alert at all times and never walk alone, especially at night in deserted areas! One time my mom,
her friend Julia and I were walking on an empty street late at night after a concert. Julia and my mother were
chatting about work and men, while I thought about my school life. Suddenly I heard Julia’s scream and saw a
guy running in the opposite direction with her purse .The lesson was learned that night- if we kept looking
behind us and making sure we were completely alone and safe, the situation would go a different way.
Traveling can bring all kinds of experience, but make sure you know what to do if certain situation will
come and have safe travels!
