‘’New-age idiocracy’'
It hasn’t been that long since I’ve seen the 2006 movie ‘’Idiocracy’’with an amazing cast and
brilliant plot. The more I looked at the society, the more I began to fear for the Earth’s future.
Not only are the people being dumbed down by today’s education, but they are being brainwashed
by news, entertainment, music industry and even with books. Every day we hear the news about wars,
gang fights, sexual harassment in schools, government issues…
Back in 2013 there was a case of a six-year-old, named Hunter Yelton from Colorado, who kissed
his classmate on the hand, which got him suspended from school. That’s right, you’ve read that
correctly. A first-grader was accused of sexual harassment for just expressing his feelings toward a
girl that he liked. Both parties, including a girl considered themselves as ‘’boyfriend and girlfriend’’,
so technically there wasn’t any unwanted kissing or touching.
Kids are more creative, more expressive than adults until they are being told to be like everyone
else, obey the rules; who are being prescribed pills that will ‘’calm them down’’, but that’s another
subject to talk about.
As for entertainment and music industry, it just gets worse with every year. Young women like
Rihanna or Ariana Grande sing songs that are mostly about sex. Girls ages ten to twenty listen to the
lyrics, without even thinking about them. Here are some of the words to ‘’Bang Bang’’ by Ariana
Grande, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj:
Go Batman, robbin’ it (maybe they meant rubbing something?)
Bang bang, cockin’ it (exactly what are they cocking?)
Queen Nicki dominant, prominent (‘’50 shades’’ reference?)
Ride his uh like a Harley (no comments on this one…)
Then pull off in his Ferrari. (pretty sure they are talking about male genitalia)
There’s not even a storyline to the lyrics, no feelings. It might be catchy, but I think that it doesn’t
make a person look smart, if he/she tries to sing it.
What happened to listening to Frank Sinatra or ‘’Queen’’? Did the songs about true love go out of
style? What about the songs about peace or family values?
As for entertainment, there are more than enough movies to point out, which are associated with
stupidity.
1.‘’Sausage Party’, 2016. The name itself is hinting at a sexual thing. However, plot is about
food items that want to escape from being eaten, but end up having a giant orgy with each other
for no reason.
2.‘’Borat’’, 2006. An immigrant comes to America from Kazakhstan. As a foreigner myself,
this movie is embarrassing, controversial and insulting to all of Eastern Europeans and Asians.
The last, but not least are the books that I happened to come upon. As a bookworm I always try to see
something new and original, but it’s always hard to come upon a book, where the idea hasn’t been
stolen from someone else.
1.‘’TTYL’’ by Lauren Myracle. The whole book is written AS text messages. There is a plot,
but no description of what’s happening around the characters. Somehow it made it as a New
York Bestseller few years back.
2.‘’Mercy on these teenage chimps’’ by Gary Soto. The main character, Ronnie, wakes up as a
chimpanzee along with his friend, Joey. Throughout the book Ronnie tries to woo his crush.
3.‘’50 Shades of Grey’’ series by E. L. James. An average college student meets a millionaire,
who has singular erotic tastes. Surprisingly it was made into three movies… and I’m sure someone
got traumatized.
In conclusion, society need to start listening, hearing, seeing and paying attention in general to how
the media is showing idiocracy and let other people know what can be done about it. The schools can
start teaching students more creativity, more adult things like learning to file taxes or how to survive
in wilderness; let the students express themselves in their own way. We as people need to get off our
cell phones and start socializing more, read intelligent books, listen to classical music that provokes
creativity. The only question is- can it be done before it’s too late?
